Quick Riff #2: Mississippi John Hurt Style pattern in G

Alternating bass riff in the key of G

For this Riff we’ll be holding down a one finger G chord while picking out notes around it. The riff features the classic John Hurt style bass line alternating between the 6th and the 4th strings with the thumb while playing additional notes with the index and middle fingers. This style of fingerpicking is often referred to as alternating bass style or Travis picking.

About Mississippi John Hurt

Mississippi John Hurt has always been one of my favorite acoustic blues songsters. Hurt specialized in the alternating bass style of fingerpicking. His legendary 1928 recordings featured several songs that he would continue to play throughout his life including Stag O Lee, Make Me Down a Pallet, Avalon Blues and Slidin’ Delta.
